SLP wages increased, but inflation increased faster.
Despite a 23.7% nominal increase in median wages, the purchasing power of the median SLP wage declined by approximately 1.8% from 2019 to 2025.¹–³
In other words, the median salary looks higher on paper, but it buys slightly less than it did in 2019.

Information is power
A median tells you where the middle of the profession falls. It does not tell you what the profession is capable of paying.
In May 2024, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $95,410 for speech-language pathologists. But the range was much wider: the lowest-paid 10% earned less than $60,480, while the highest-paid 10% earned more than $132,850.⁴
Meaning that the difference between the lower and upper ends of our profession was more than $72,370 per year.⁴
The point is not that every SLP should be making $132,850. The point is that the median is a reference point, not a ceiling. I want more SLPs to understand what higher compensation actually exists, recognize the value they bring, and feel confident advocating for pay that reflects it.

Methodology
The 2025 annualized median SLP wage shown on this page was calculated from the BLS median hourly wage of $47.05 using 2,080 work hours per year. Cumulative inflation was calculated from the 2019 and 2025 annual-average CPI-U values. Percentage wage changes and estimated inflation-adjusted wage change were calculated from those figures. National OEWS estimates represent the surveyed workforce in each year and do not track the same individuals over time.
